Resources

  • A+  The Connected Child  by Karen Purvis, David Cross, and Wendy Lyons--If you are only going to read one book, make it this one.  Not too long, full of info, holistic approach, practical, and won't leave you feeling like a failure as a human being.
  • A+  Jon Kabat-Zinn tapes and books for meditation.  He's got a great voice and knows his stuff. Not to be confused with TM from the 60's, this is not religious in any way.  Jon does a lot of work with medical treatment (terminally ill patients/chronic pain/psoriasis) and how meditation can help.  It's simple and doesn't require concentration.  Even I can do it--and that says a lot!
  • A  Dan Hughes--any of his books or workshops.  The man is amazing in real life too. He is Mr. Rogers as therapist, patient, empathic, gentle--I could have listened to him for days.  And his ideas are useful.  He's into high structure, high nurture, and attunement with your child, and has an awesome sense of humor (which I personally find very helpful.)
  • A  Therapeutic Parenting: It's a Matter of Attitude! by Deborah Hage--practical ideas for attaching with your child.  I believe this woman has fostered about a zillion kids (rough estimate). She also has a good sense of humor.  This book is full of simple things you can try at home.
  • B  Beyond Consequences Logic and Control (3 books in the series) by Forbes and Post--These books have sections that are A+, especially when they explain the fear response and how necessary it is to parent differently when dealing with a traumatized child.  However, they can also leave a parent feeling inadequate and without the tools needed to make things better. The 'method' used pretty much requires you not use other ideas or techniques  ( for example, behavioral interventions are considered out of bounds.) For some people they've been a lifesaver; others have thrown them across the room in frustration.  It depends on your child and you.   I've attended the weekend certification workshop and it was interesting but did not provide much information that wasn't in the books.  Heather is an outstanding speaker, very engaging and entertaining, it's certainly worth seeing her in action if she's in your area.
